Housing and benefits
Why this matters: Stress can make rent, food, and paperwork feel impossible. Help exists, and much of it is free.
Start with 211 (US): dial 2-1-1 or search 211.org. It connects you to local help with food, rent, utilities, and shelter. Services vary by location.
Other places to look:
- Food assistance: local food banks, and SNAP (US) through your state.
- Rent and eviction: if you have an eviction notice, contact legal aid right away. Many areas offer free help.
- Utilities: many utility companies have hardship programs.
If it is urgent: if you are at immediate risk of losing shelter, call 211 first, then ask for emergency shelter.
Counterpoint: Programs run out, and eligibility rules are strict. Apply to more than one place, and keep a record of every call.
