Paying for it
Why this matters: Cost is one of the most common reasons people delay care.
Places to look:
- Sliding-scale clinics: fees are set by income. Ask any clinic: "Do you offer a sliding scale?"
- Community mental health centers: often lower-cost, sometimes free, and they serve people regardless of ability to pay.
- Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs): many employers offer a few free counseling sessions. Ask HR whether yours does.
- Open Path Collective (openpathcollective.org): a network of therapists who offer reduced-fee sessions (US).
- Medicaid and Medicare (US): coverage and eligibility vary by state. Check your state's Medicaid office.
- Insurance: check whether a therapist is in network. Out-of-network sessions may still be partly reimbursed. Ask for a superbill, an itemized receipt you can submit.
Questions to ask:
- What is the full cost per session, including any fees?
- Is there a sliding scale, and what do I need to show to qualify?
Counterpoint: Low-cost options often have waiting lists, and sliding-scale programs vary a lot. Plan for a delay, and keep calling.

Next step: Call one community mental health center or sliding-scale clinic this week and ask about waiting times.
