Relationships
Why this matters: Other people can be a support, but they can also add stress. Boundaries help both sides.
Setting a boundary:
- Say what you need in one sentence, without a long apology.
- Example: "I can talk for 20 minutes tonight, then I need to rest."
Talking to family:
- Pick a calm time. Start with how you feel, not what they did.
- Example: "I've been struggling lately, and I want you to know what's going on."
Supporting a friend:
- Ask directly: "Are you thinking about hurting yourself?" Asking does not put the idea in their head.
- If they may be in danger, call or text 988 (US) or local emergency services, and stay with them.
- You can be a friend without being their therapist. Encourage them to see a professional, and offer to help them find one.
Looking after yourself: supporting someone is tiring. Plan breaks, and talk to someone you trust.
Counterpoint: Some relationships need distance, not repair. Choosing distance is a legitimate decision.

Next step: Choose one boundary you want to set this week, and write the sentence you would say.
